The Firm was established in 1966 by late Archictect Mr. Dilip Kr. Borah to fulfil a long felt need for architectural and engineering know how in governmental, public and private building, educational campuses, industrial townships, and indeed, in all facets of the construction industry. From a modest beginning, Designers’ Guild has now grown up to be the leading firm of Architects , interior designers and Consulting Engineers in the North-Eastern region. The firm has an impressive list of clients –Assam Agricultural University, Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of India, National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development, Indian Institute of Bank Management, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd., Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd., Numaligarh Refinery Ltd., North East Development Finance Corporation Assam P.W.D., C.P.W.D. – for whom the firm has planned and designed a complete educational campus, industrial townships, industrial and office buildings, bank buildings, water reservoirs, road bridges, factory/ industrial buildings and the like.

Otained a honours degree in civil engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1958,
and was a corporate member of the Institution of
Engineers ( India ). He joined the Assam P W D
as an Asstt. Engineer in 1958, and in 1959 was deputed
to the Gauhati Refinery Project, where he worked till 1964,
first as an Asstt. Engineer and as a Divisional Head.
He then joined the Assam Govt. Construction
Corporation Ltd., as Project Engineer. He joined the
firm in 1969 as a partner. He has written several
computer programs on structural analysis and is
acknowledged to be an authority on computer-aided
structural design. He was a member of the State
Planning Board and the Economic Advisory Council
of the Government of Assam. He was also a member
of the Committee for the selection of a site for the permanent Capital of Assam, and a member of the Task
Force constituted to suggest measures for the all-round economic development of Assam. He is a member
of the International Association for Bridge & Structural Engineering and Indian Roads Congress (IRC).
A number of his papers on computer-aided design of bridge elements have been published in
‘The Bridge & Structural Engineer’ and in ‘Indian Highways’. |
INDRAJIT BARUA |
Obtained his B.Arch. degree from National Institute of
Technology ,Tiruchirapalli in the year 1997 and also
registered with the Council of Architecture, New Delhi
(Registration no. CA/2001/45220) and thereafter worked
as an associated Architect and Interior designer in
Banka & Associates ,Guwahati. He is under training and
concept specialization into Green Building Architecture
and Bio-technology Architecture and is also registered
with IGBC (Indian Green Building Council , Hyderabad) .
In addition to building projects, he had done consultancy
and designing into specialized interiors related to IT
Sectors , Corporate Business centres ,state of the art
Conference halls ,mini auditoria, specialized Clinics ,
Laboratory units, hospitals and much more. A whole and
an adequate exposure in designing of infrastructure
facilities like HVAC, Electrical, Office Automation ,
Plumbing and Acoustics with the help of specialized
consultants have formulated him to constitute the firm
into a full fledged industry as far as Specialized Interiors
are concerned. |

♦ The first 7-storied RCC framed building with flat slabs and RCC shear walls for a seismic resistance – Regional Office Building for the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development at Guwahati.
♦ The first multi-storied steel framed building with large column grids of 12.5 * 6.2 metres with RCC shear walls for a seismic resistance – Corporate Office Building for North East Development Finance Corporation Ltd. At Guwahati.
♦ The largest domed roof in Assam – 20 metre diameter – State Transport Building at Jorhat. The largest orthotropic plate floor & roof – 18 m * 12 m – Veterinary Biological Building at Guwahati
♦ The use of diagonally braced frames to resist seismic forces – Reserve Bank of India Campus & the SBI Officers’ Campus at Guwahati.
♦ The first use of granular columns as a foundation system for multi-storied buildings in very weak soils – 5 storied Bachelor Officers’ Quarters for ONGC at Nazira & 4/5 storied Officers flats for SBI, at Guwahati, 7 storied NABARD Regional Office Building at Guwahati.
♦ The first large span folded plate roof 2 * 15 m * 60 m – APRO Building at Guwahati. The first prestressed concrete bowstring girder bridge in the country – the two lane RCC Bridge over River Dikhow at Sibsagar.
♦ Use of in-house developed computer programs for building & bridge design. Identification of liquefaction prone soil at Tezpur University Campus and suggestion of measures to prevent liquefaction.
♦ First large span (24*24) m. RCC hyper-shell structure in the North-East. First GREEN BUILDING in North-East under LEED NC design stage.
